I trained at UW in pediatrics on both the wispr and a standard otoscope and became a big believer in and advocate for the wispr. The wispr allows for easy visualization of the TM in even small infants, squirmy toddlers, and patients with lots of cerumen, as it requires only a narrow window to fit the tip and the camera is in the tip. This is the difference between looking through a long tunnel (standard otoscope) and standing at the exit of the tunnel (wispr) to see what is beyond it. Every pediatrics preceptor/learner would benefit from having a wispr in the office to allow for the learner and preceptor to discuss images and ensure the trainee is seeing what the attending is seeing. It is also helpful to show parents/patients what the clinician is seeing. I decided to purchase one for my new practice because the standard otoscope doesn’t hold a candle to the wispr for general (and especially pediatric) clinical practice. Highly recommend!
The WiscMed device really allows for clear and accurate evaluation. Being able to keep distance allows easier evaluation of the little ones it also allows the ear to be evaluated quickly. The image are great and allows proper Dx. Many times kids being are Dxd with AOM but with this device evaluation is better and allows to to truly evaluate thus allowing for better Antibiotic stewardship. lastly I work in conjunction with an ENT he has pts f/u locally and i send him an image which is easy to accomplish with this device and prevents the need for far travel. overall great device. improvement can be with the battery life.
I love how I can show patients a picture of their ear but the battery does not hold a charge very long.
Overall live this otoscope, there are times the image can be blurry however
I like the visualization of the TM, ability to pause and save images and send as pdf’s and the pediatric fun visuals. The new fit on the Welch Allyn base feels a little awkward but is much more durable than the plastic black base from previous Wispr’s . It does not fit well in my older case but I am able to zip the case closed and still protect the Wispr.
